What are you reading right now?
I’m immersed in Wicked Enchantment, a selection of poems by the great Wanda Coleman. It is a marvel—funny, smart, sharp-edged, righteous—and includes the full range of her voice and many of her “American Sonnets.” Edited by Terrance Hayes for a revitalized Black Sparrow Press (Yay!). Also in my hands, are Indigo by Ellen Bass, and An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo. For fiction reading, I’m keeping up with Roddy Doyle so I’ll always remember how to laugh and cry at the same time. Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart is on the nightstand, just getting started on that. And, oh! a thousand others I’d love to talk about with you.
What’s next for you?
I am putting the finishing touches on my full-length manuscript (finally!) and choosing where to send it for its first round of submissions. A friend of mine has a tee-shirt with the words “Don’t ask me about the f***king book!” Hoping I won’t have to borrow that shirt from him!
